Web/Mobile App Critique: Snapchat Review

Snapchat is a popular mobile application that allows users to communicate through photos, videos, text messages, and stories. This happens to be one of my personal favorites and most used app. I use Snapchat regularly to stay connected with friends and family because it offers a quick and interactive way to share everyday moments. The app is known for its disappearing messages, creative filters, and social features that make communication more engaging. This review evaluates Snapchat’s usability, design, and functionality while offering recommendations for improvement.

One of Snapchat’s greatest strengths is its usability. The app opens directly to the camera, allowing users to quickly capture and share photos or videos without navigating through multiple menus. Sending snaps and messages is simple, and users can easily view stories from friends or discover content from creators. The app’s layout encourages fast communication, making it convenient for people who prefer visual messaging over traditional texting. However, some features can be difficult for new users to find because many functions rely on swiping gestures rather than clearly labeled buttons.

The design of Snapchat is modern, colorful, and visually appealing. The camera-centered interface reflects the app’s primary purpose of sharing images and videos. Snapchat also allows users to personalize their experience through Bitmojis, filters, lenses, and themes. The visual design is consistent throughout the app, creating a recognizable brand identity. While the design is attractive, some areas can appear cluttered because there are many features competing for attention, including Stories, Spotlight, Snap Map, and advertisements.

In terms of functionality, Snapchat offers a wide range of features beyond basic messaging. Users can send photos, videos, voice messages, and text chats. The Stories feature allows users to share content that remains visible for twenty-four hours, while Spotlight provides short-form entertainment videos similar to other social media platforms. Another unique feature is Snap Map, which allows users to share their location with friends if they choose to do so. The app also supports voice and video calls, making it a versatile communication platform. Additionally, Snapchat’s augmented reality (AR) filters and lenses continue to be among the most innovative features available on social media today.

Although Snapchat is highly functional, there are several areas where improvements could be made. First, the app should simplify its navigation system by providing more visible menus and labels for important features. This would make the app easier for new users to learn. Second, Snapchat could improve privacy settings by making them more accessible and easier to understand. Since location sharing is a major feature, users should be able to manage privacy options more quickly. Third, the app could offer more customizable notification settings so users can reduce unnecessary alerts and focus on the updates that matter most to them.

After receiving feedback from my classmates and instructor, I reflected on additional ways Snapchat could be improved. One classmate agreed that Snapchat’s camera-first design makes sharing photos and videos quick and convenient but pointed out that the app may be confusing for new users because many features rely on swipe gestures and hidden menus. I agree that clearer navigation would make the application easier to learn. Another suggestion was to reduce advertisements and promoted content that appear between stories and videos, as these can interrupt the user experience. In addition, improving battery optimization would help users who frequently use Snapchat’s camera, filters, and location services. This feedback helped me better evaluate both the strengths and weaknesses of the application.

In conclusion Snapchat is a creative and effective communication platform with strong usability, appealing design, and innovative functionality. Its messaging tools, stories, and augmented reality features help it stand out from competitors. While improvements to navigation, privacy controls, notifications, and battery efficiency could enhance the user experience, Snapchat remains one of the most popular and engaging social media applications available today.
